A Look At Santa

Santa stories have been around forever, supplying children with a look at Santa throughout history as well as in recent years. Many of the stories, xmas songs even xmas decoration are based on a mixture of the classic Santa and a Santa with a more modernized twist, which begs the question; what exactly are the origins of Santaand how has this evolved into what we know today?

To start, we must first take a look at Santa in the past.

Mr. Claus is actually based off of the English character Father Christmas. Father Christmas was said to be an overweight, old man, usually around 70 years of age, who wear a bright green outfit trimmed in white fur. When you take a look at at Santa 2011, however, you’ll note that he wears a red outfit instead. Why the sudden change?

The reason is actually based off a famous commercial for coke-cola. The brand has always had the traditional colors of red and white, and, in 1922, they decided to use none other than santa himself to advertise their brand along with the slogan “Thirst Knows No Season.” For whatever reason, this color scheme caught on and the Santa of today is now almost always drawn in red and white rather than green.

There’s more to Santa Claus than just his looks though. It’s been reported as far back as the 1820s that he lives in the North Pole with his elves . Together, this elite Christmas team all year round to create presents for all the good boys and girls of the world. Come Christmas eve, Santa takes flight in a magical sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. A ninth reindeer may also join during particularly foggy weather. His name is of course Rudolph, who has a glowing red nose to lead the way.

Children often worry that Santa will miss their houses due to this less-than-perfect weather. Because of this, many decorate their houses with xmas light to make it more visible from the sky. Once Santa has spotted the correct house, he then lands on the roof, slides down the chimney, and places the Christmas presents under the tree. There’s much debate as to what happens if there is no chimney, though rumor has it Santa can magically make one appear, just as he can magically make reindeer fly.
