The first Christmas Cards were sent and enjoyed by England’s royal family, beginning in the 1840’s. The first commercial christmas card was commissioned in 1943 by Sir Henry Cole of London and illustrated by John Calcott Horsley. The picture, which showed a family with a small child drinking wine together, caused some controversy, but the idea of cards caught on. English cards at the time showed flowers, fairies and other designs that evoke spring instead of religious or wintery scenes. In 1875, Louis Prang introduced the Christmas Card to America, but before long cheap imitations took over the market. Soon people were sending postcards for Christmas. Since the beginning, Christmas cards have served as a way for people to stay in touch with friends and relatives. In late Victorian times, images of Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas dressed in a red cloak with a long white beard began to appear on Christmas cards.
